High School Government And Politics Class - 782 Words
I remember a mixture of enthusiasm and dread prior to a visit from a Pennsylvania state representative to my high school government and politics class. We were discussing local educational funding and I had many questions for him about the topic. But more than anything I did not want to embarrass myself. I went to bed early the previous night, and before class I guzzled two cans of Monster energy drink. There was a safety pin in my pocket just in case. The first few minutes of class I felt euphoric and was enthralled with the discussion on the local political landscape. However, my energy quickly began to drain. I tried to focus on my notes but after a half hour I was barely able to grip my pencil and saw that much of what I had written was incoherent scribble. In desperation, I took the safety pin out of my pocket and frantically began stabbing the palm of my hand. My efforts were for naught, because at some point I completely fell asleep only to wake up five minutes before the lectu re was over. This was a common occurrence throughout my high school career but I was not correctly diagnosed with narcolepsy until the spring of my senior year. As a result, much of my college experience was spent adjusting to life with this diagnosis. Under the care of Dr. Cantor at the Penn Sleep Center, I felt confident that I could finally be a normal person. But I soon found that a medical diagnosis and treatment was not a literal cure all. `` When They Aren t Eating Us, They Bring Us Together ...
When it comes to survival Leah A. Murray in her article, ââ¬Å"When They Arenââ¬â¢t Eating Us, They Bring Us Together: Zombies and the American Social Contractâ⬠suggests that individuals that have a community built on a common goal gives these people the best odds of surviving a Posthuman event. The episode ââ¬Å"Killer Withinâ⬠of The Walking Dead shows Rick, Carol, Maggie, Glenn, and Daryl acting individualistic towards members not in their pre-established community in an effort to protect themselves from potential dangers. However, T-Dog demonstrates a communitarian approach by wanting to allow new people to join their community. According to Murray Individualism is when individuals are self-reliant and put their needs in front of anyone else, and communitarianism is when individuals put the needs of society above their own. These citizens work together and have a sense of community and self-sacrifice. In The Walking Dead season three episode, ââ¬Å"Killer Within, â⬠Rick and his group demonstrate Murray s concept of individualism as they oppose the idea of adding new people to their group because they fear them. However, T-Dog represents a communitarian approach as he strives to convince Rick and the others that the new people should be initiated into Rickââ¬â¢s group. In a previous episode, Rick and his group found prisoners still alive and living inside the prison where they are also residing, but a few of them had since died. Only two were known to still be alive. This episode begins by

Young and Menace by Fall Out Boy free essay sample
I found this piece to be extraordinary at the first listen! Its very different from any other Fall Out Boy song heard, and it has its own twist. The mixture of deep/high tones brings the piece all together. The lyrics also have a surprising touch; they have a deeper meaning to them that hits home for many listeners and fans. Speculation has been floating around ever since the single hit on April 27, 2017, and many conspiracies of what the song may mean have come to the surface. Some people choose to believe it represents the battle of anxiety. It goes from isolation to rage to anxiety and anxiousness. The lyrics within the song touch upon these sensitive subjects, if you listen closely. And if you watch the music video? Oh, that gives this song a whole new meaning! Fall Out Boys new music video also dropped with this single, premiering on the same date of April 27, 2017. We will write a custom essay sample on Young and Menace by Fall Out Boy or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Fans were surprised, yet excited to see the new video, and were equally confused as to what this represented. If you are a Fall Out Boy fan or have simply seen past videos of theirs, you would know that some of the themes of their videos can be quite dark. This music video isnt necessarily dark, but it is unique and somewhat confusing. After further research, it turns out that Fall Out Boys Pete Wentz has spoken out on the meaning behind this video: Its hard to rationalize rageits hard to quantify anxiety. This song does neither. It embraces the wave of those emotions. (from NME.com). Within the video, you see the young girls parents are animals, and see how they are not only verbally abusive to each other, but to her. She sees that as animals because they are wild and uncontrollable and because of these things, her emotions, such as rage and anxiousness, get the best of her. Thats why she is seen running away from her home shes trying to find a lighter side of this situation. The video accurately describes these feelings. The song also plays nicely into it; both work together as a tag-team. If you havent yet, go onto YouTube and type in Young and Menace by Fall Out Boy and take a peek at the video. I guarantee you wont be disappointed.

to kill a mockin bird essays
to kill a mockin bird essays In 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech called I Have a Dream. The purpose of this speech was to change the way that African Americans are treated; Martin Luther King Jr. uses metaphors, repetition, and historical reference to enhance his purpose. The speech I Have a Dream has many metaphorical references. One quote in particular helps show the power and effectiveness of metaphors. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination(1). This quote demonstrates one of his uses of metaphors. Martin Luther King Jr. is saying that even after African Americans were pronounced free one hundred years ago they are still experiencing persecution and prejudice for the color of their skin. This is valuable to his purpose because it gives people a new perspective on how people treat African Americans even after they declared that they were free. Martin Luther King Jr. uses repetition throughout his speech. Repetition is a very powerful tool when writing; it puts extra emphasis on things you are trying to get across to your audience. A quote which shows this is I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: we hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal. I have a dream...(2). In this case repetition is being used to get across the point that Martin Luther King Jr. hopes that the future of the African American will be much brighter (which is the purpose of the speech as a whole). By using repetition it forces the listener to pay attention to that part in the speech in particular due to the repetition of the sound. This helps his purpose because it projects the thinking of every African American at that time, giving the non-African American people a picture of what they dream to come in the ...

WalMart's profile of computing and network infrastructure Essay
WalMart's profile of computing and network infrastructure - Essay Example So our ties to Bentonville, Ark. - where Sam Walton opened the first store that bore the Walton name and where Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is still based - give us our foundation. Another Walmart.com goal - providing easy access to more Wal-Mart - is evident in the more than 1,000,000 products available online and in the innovative businesses that Walmart.com continues to develop, such as Music Downloads and 1-Hour Photos, which gives customers the convenience of ordering products online and picking them up at a local Wal-Mart. In short, Walmart.com is passionate about combining the best of two great worlds - technology and world-class retailing - to give customers a wide assortment of their favorite products, Every Day Low Prices, guaranteed satisfaction, friendly service, convenient hours (24 hours, 7 days a week) and a great online shopping experience. According to Mark Schmidt, senior director for information services at Wal-Mart, the installation of NCR System 3000 processors -- which began last month in the Springfield, Mo., stores -- is the second phase of a systems upgrade at the chain that began in August 1990 with the installation of Hewlett-Packard's HP 9000 Model 375 system. The retailer chose to purchase both systems so that "we have two vendor partners to bank on," said Schmidt. Approximately 800 of Wal-Mart's stores will use the HP system and the other 800 will use the NCR system. Both models are open-system computers and both use the UNIX operating system, allowing intercommunications and compatibility. "We can take data tapes from one to the other if we had to," Schmidt added. Tony Fano, vice president of NCR Retail Systems Division, said, "The NCR 3445 support of UNIX V.4 matches Wal-Mart's UNIX open systems strategy. Because it is based on industry standards, the NCR 3445 can provide enterprise-wide computing solutions based on open systems components and cooperative processing." NCR's System 3000 is a seven-level family of scalable, compatible, general purpose computer systems that support the industry-standard operating systems -- UNIX V.4, SCO UNIX, OS/2 and MS-DOS. Wal-Mart had been using the IBM Series 1, which was installed in 1979. "It is a proprietary system. We wanted something more open, so we could be independent of a vendor if we needed to be, said Schmidt. "We needed a system with more capacity. We wanted one that was open and scalable -- to go in relatively small and then grow," said Schmidt. The installation of the HP 9000 Model 375 was completed last month, according to Schmidt. He said the chain is aiming at Aug. 1 completion of the NCR installation. The NCR 3445 will provide connections between NCR and non-NCR point-of-sale controllers and pharmacy systems with Wal-Mart's central computer in its headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. The NCR and HP systems are configured to support up to 16 terminals in a Wal-Mart store. According to Schmidt, the systems currently are doing traditional applications, such as payroll, general accounting and merchandise reorder. Potential applications include financial management, sales analysis and labor management (Tahmincioglu, 1991). Wal-Mart has signed a multimillion

Survey online travel agencies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Survey online travel agencies - Essay Example The second type is the 'blind' sites which are similar to open sites but they allow a customer to bid a price, a location or a time to get his/her ticket reservation but a user may not know the airline, departure time or specific hotel until the actual ticket is bought. These websites also have the normal search functionality where a customer can view the travel fares without bidding. The third type of online travel sites are merely search engines popularly known as 'meta search engines' (Rand, 2006). The term means that they search other sites which provide air travel. The search engine goes through all available online travel agencies websites (open sites) and finds the best results for the user. (CR, 2008) As mentioned above, there are three types of online travel agencies. These agencies fight within themselves to get the highest market share (Rand, 2006). For the analysis sake, the business strategy is compared according to these types. Popular open sites include agencies like Orbitz, Expedia, and Travelocity amongst others. Orbitz (www.orbitz.com) strategy is to market itself in the eco-tourism and beats the other two companies in terms of thoroughness and provides car rentals and hotel reservations at guaranteed prices. Expedia (www.expedia.com) is a highly rated site which offers extra benefits to the customers like rewards for frequent flyers, going to less-common foreign routes and awards programs. Travelocity's (www.Travelocity.com) website is easily customizable to find what the user wants. Best fares, time frame and different combinations of airline, hotels, car rentals etc. can be entered as search parameters and found easily. (CR, 2008) Blind Sites Two popular blind sites are there in the category, Priceline and Hotwire. Priceline's (www.priceline.com) strategy is to let travelers bid a price on where and when they want to fly. The website then searches for all available seats on any airline matching the cost, time and the destination. The bid can be rejected if the bid is too low, where a traveler can increase the bid and try again in 24 hours. Due to the inconvenience of not knowing the exact time of departure and airline, Priceline is best option only for people who are flexible and need a low cost travelling solution. On the other hand, Hotwire (www.hotwire.com) is successful on its own strategy. Travelers can select a tourism package complete with hotel and car reservation without knowing the airline or the hotel. However by specifying the location radius, the website can choose the best priced hotel within that radius. The site also offers consultancy with the help of historical trends which makes Hotwire more interesting and better in terms of customer perception. (CR, 2008) Search Engines Travel search engines like Kayak and Yahoo! FareChase are two of the most popular Meta search engines. Kayak (www.kayak.com) plays on its extra features like finding the lowest fares from a traveler's closest airport. Their deals with hotels and airlines return a very good price for the customers. Its most helpful feature includes the fare comparison tool that lets a customer check the lowest fares that other passengers paid for similar routes and to compare search results against those found on other open or blind sites. Yahoo!
